Fig (Port Jackson?)
Hi there
I have just finished repotting this fig after a root prune (they were growing out of the bottom of the box) and took a picture for my files. I would love some ideas on where to go with the branching. It will grow branches from its trunk all over the place, although the branches on the left side dont seem to be as strong (worried look)...the roots on that side were all fine. Look forward to any comments, thank you. Regards Jules ![]() |

Re: Fig (Port Jackson?)
okay, now this is completely irrelevant as advice, but I want to know what's going on with the Coca-Cola cans along with your trees?

Re: Fig (Port Jackson?)
Maybe you could get some branching started like this. It looks like the lower right branch is about right, it just needs to grow. There should be another one at the top near where the trunk changes direction. After that you can just choose some good spacing and leave yourself a few more than you need.
Tough to patch that brick wall. Regards, Matt ![]()

Re: Fig (Port Jackson?)
hi ya everyone
Hey windblown - The coke can is the international form of scale!! It saves me having to tell you how big the tree is and also save me having to convert cm into those pesky inch things ![]() hi ya Shambhala - you were right on the money on the scale thing, but im def. a girl (grin). Just a point of interest, do you think women and men have different styles when it comes to bonsai...in general. I know we all have different styles and thats a great thing...just a thought. Matt - wow - thanks for the virtual, i have something to aim for, i was one training it in more of a broom style and changed my mind a bit ( a girl can do that you know) thanks again for your input and also on my pine! ![]() Till next time Jules |

Re: Fig (Port Jackson?)
Jules, nice tree (as are the others we have seen from you). How long have you had this one? What was it like when you got it? Do you have many trees?

Re: Fig (Port Jackson?)
hi Jay
This fig comes from North Queensland where they grow like mad. I swapped some large olive trees (which are actually weeds here in south australia) for some figs on a trip i made a few years back. I flew it home bare rooted and potted it up into its box and left it. It really hasnt changed a lot, I was thinking more of a broom style to start but it really is too tapered for that. All of the figs that i have from that trip grow mad arial roots, which is kind of a messy look i think, but its interesting to have a varied collection too. As for me, well i have been interested in bonsai for about 10 years. my collection in that time grew as i wanted one of everything, then shrunk when i realised that most were just never going to get there (just putting a tree in a pot does not a bonsai make!)!! I joined a club where the teacher had very set ideas on trees - they had to absolutely conform to the rules to be presented. I have spent the last few years trying to de-programme myself of this thinking and work with the rules AND with the trees, but most of my trees look alike!! So here i am, trying to get other points of view and learn new ideas. i have cut alot of trees back to the start again point as i make mistakes and my ideas change. I dont believe i have any real quality trees (looking admiringly at trees like Mr Walter Pall's) but im only 29 so i hope i have a long time get it right! My current collection is about 50 potted trees and 50 or so in training...i have maybe 300 pots though, that has to tell you something.... regards Juliet (Jules) |

Re: Fig (Port Jackson?)
Hi again, As I grow with my trees and my knowledge I find it interesting the differences in the parts of the world and their Bonsai. I am from the North East of the USA, my trees are more of the hardy type and less of the tropical and sub-tropical. Id's say you were on your way to both enjoyment and some darn nice trees! I am going to start attending meeting of a Bonsai Club shortly. I hope their feeling for trees is more liberal, with attention to the rules, not strick observance. Good luck and keep posting! Jay

Re: Fig (Port Jackson?)
Jules, thanks for the info. I have a very small collection but have also been working on bosai for about 10 years. I, too, have recently reshaped about everything I have and going a new direction. However, at 62 I don't have the years ahead of me for learning and maturing in the art that you do!

Re: Fig (Port Jackson?)
Hi Jules, You have wonderful taper on that monster fig. Matt is right on with his vert. the only thing I might add is that these trees tend to grow with a sort of rounded top. Matt has gone with the traditional Japanese look. Of course the way it is pruned lends it to that shape. Keep up the good work.
Best regards, Bonsaial
