I agree with PatArizona I would have left the branches, but let them grow wild and thicken to be more in proportion to the trunk.
It definitely was leggy looking but I think a better description would be "in-development-looking". Still a damn cool tree though. |

To me, it looks much better now than the before picture. It looks more like an ancient tree now than before. All I think it needs is to let those branches grow out and thicken and create a long low triangle with the foliage but still keeping it relatively close to the powerful trunk.
