I agree with PatArizona I would have left the branches, but let them grow wild and thicken to be more in proportion to the trunk.

It definitely was leggy looking but I think a better description would be "in-development-looking".

Still a damn cool tree though.

FWIW, I grew up not far from Dowagiac, and went to MSU.

To me, it looks much better now than the before picture. It looks more like an ancient tree now than before. All I think it needs is to let those branches grow out and thicken and create a long low triangle with the foliage but still keeping it relatively close to the powerful trunk.
