Ficus microcarpa
This tree seems to be recovering nicely after an initial reduction from nursery stock last year...I decided to go with a twin-trunk design, even though I am not entirely happy with the angle of the trunk division.
Currently the dominant trunk is 17 inches in height and the width of both trunks at the soil level is 5 inches. Jerry Meislik, in his book, "Ficus: The Exotic Bonsai" speaks of the resiliency of microcarpa as compared to other cultivars, particularly benjamina. This is my first experience with this cultivar and I am quite happy so far....back budding has been very prolific (for me, anyway, as I am located in Zone 5). Regards, Tom S. |

FWIW, a thought
I agree with you that the angle of the trunks at present is a bit off. I spent a moment fiddling with a new planting angle. This is more of a thought to play with than an actual suggestion, but it's something to consider, I suppose.

Hi Tom,
I looked at this tree for quite some time and tried to envisage a future for it. My eye is constantly drawn to the straightness of the trunks and the lack of taper, especially in the right hand one. Personally I think these need cutting back hard on both trunks to get some taper introduced as well as some movement. Its a shame that lower limb was removed on the main trunk, as that possibly would have been an ideal place to chop back too. You could go about developing a canopy as it stands at the moment, but I think you'd end up with a mediocre bonsai at best, which would be a shame as the twin trunk style could work very well here. All the best, Aaron
