Ficus never heals that well for me, but I am not in the tropics where they put on scads of growth. I would be tempted to leave short stubs for that reason.

In any case, don't make the wounds any larger than they have to be. (I can't really tell how big they are because of the sealant, but they look like they might be large)

Looks like you are on the right track with this one. Maybe after this tree has recovered a bit it will reward you with some lower bud breaks and make the further cutting back easier to stomach!

progress report

Just a note of thanks to all who responded to my question. I think this ones flushing out quite nice. No need to prune back harder till next year. Thanks for the high nitrogen tip. Thanks also to Ron for assuring me i had enough hot weather in ATL. Took some of the cuttings and experimented. A few in Oasis foam (one survived) and a big branch (THE PROBLEM BRANCH) cut at a 45 degree angle. Its doing well repotted in scotts metro mix 366 w/ coir.

actually Miracid believe it or not. and 90 degree temps with close to that humidity numbers.
