Ficus Benjamina - Thoughts?
Good day all,
As some of you know, I have the chance to pick up a nice Boxwood from a gentleman I produced a website for. He also passed along a picture of this ficus, and I thought I'd see what you guys thought of it. The trunk is 4" ... tree is 24" high: Thoughts? Good tree? Nice material? Jason |

I think we need a better angle. It looks nice though. Remember with these trees you need to keep at least one leaf on a branch or it will die.

Jason:
It looks like a very healthy Ficus Benjamina.... I enjoy semi and tropicals, but you just have to make sure, as you have been warned that you never cut off part of a branch without leaving at least one leaf. It seems that you will have lots of choices if you obtain this tree, but from what I see there is a large scar on the trunk, that you will have to work into the final design.... (a hollow on the trunk?) I doubt if you could hide it as it is below all they branches... Good luck! Carl L. Crow... I think you and I do not always agree (nor should we), but we do respect each other and contribute, as do mostly all that come by.
There are a few (thankfully only a few) who either think they are funny or get some joy out of their remarks. The best I can say is they are like a cold.... You don't want it! You don't need it! It comes anyway, it anoys and it upset you! Then it goes away!!! Your Bonsai Buddy with an online cold Jay

Agreed, Jay.
Normally I'd just ignore this sort of nonsense (from LivingArt, not from you). But Jason is a relatively new poster here who as asked some interesting questions and kicked off some interesting threads. He doesn't deserve that sort of garbage in response - hence my reply. Best regards, Carl

Jason,
This is a bad bonsai but no a bad potensai. If the price is right you might want to consider it. F. Benjamina can be difficult to ramify, and you have the obvious obstacle, as Carl pointed out, of the pruning scar. Proper hollowing and free branch growth will help. it to heal rapidly, even in Michigan. I have one in my Gallery started in OH so it is possible to grow these thing s up North. Does much better in TX, however. Basic branch selection for location and taper will induce back budding. Also brush up on your defoliating techniques because they'll come in handy.... Jim Stone TX |

I was a bit shocked by that remark ... maybe had he explained himself, it would have been a little different. I guess everyone has their own opinion, but I ask some of you to think about when you first started in Bonsai. I'm sure it takes some time to develop an "eye" for good material
![]() I'm still developing mine, and this is the most extraordinary bonsai resource I've come across, so I will continue to post my questions and comments (and try to "Weed-out" those that are not helpful). Thank you all And once again, any more comments about this tree would be greatly appreciated!Jason |
