Question Ficus Benjamina Restyling

Hy guys.i've bought a new tree.I heard that this tree doesn't like wiringIs that true ? Also, i am planning to make a raft style from it. What do you think.Should i bury the trunk underground or leave it as it is to develop aerial roots(more interesting)? If possible any visuals would be fine

The above link leads to more in detail photos of the tree.

Thanks again mates

Most all the trunk is completely obscured by leaves, but it seems to moves around some and must be interesting. I can't tell you much other than maybe you could tie a branch out of the way or clean it up and rephotograph it if you want feedback.

With the movement you have in the lower trunk, the branches are going to need to move too. Long straight parts aren't going to work effectively. So, you will need to cut back and/or use wire.

Regards,

Matt

This species does not mind wire at all. The problem is getting the branch to stay in place after you take the wire off. I have found that the branch will spring right back even if you leave the wire on until it bites into the branch.

I have two of these aswell, and by looking at the plastic pot they come from the same batch. I like them but be careful while bending because the branches snap easily !

Rene,
I have never had any problems with branches snapping on these trees. I have found that they are one of the easiest species to bend.

Anyways, the best way to tell how well a branch on a tree can bend is to cut an unnecesary one off, wire it and bend it until it snaps. Then you will know how hard not to bend the branches.

this is an offshoot of the benji .. ficus 'Rianne'
or maybe ficus Wiandi .. and yes the branches will snap if ya breathe hard on them.. lol ..wirering is difficult but possible. With the growth pattern in more of a zig zag, clip and grow works best. Otherwise very similiar to ficus benj.

Charles,

I did... The inside of the branches is all soft and weak. You can bend, but be careful.

I have a Wiandi and you're right Mon. I coughed and the branch broke. I ruined the tree by trying to wire it. Branch by branch broke off. I would suggest clip & grow.

I have a 'Rianne' cultivar of the Ficus benj. as well. Did I discover all to fast that they snap easily. Great thing about them tho, is that there branching patterns are zigzag-ie. In the summer sun the leaves get smaller and the internodes tighten up nicely.

Rooting the branches, even thick ones after snapping (like a carrot) is very easy as well.

BTW....

here is a short history of where the 'Rianne' came from
