Ficus Benjamina Project

Now that the temperature is below 100-degrees, I purchased this Ficus benjamina for a project I've been wanting to try. I think it was Matt that suggested binding multiple trunks of a ficus together and letting it fuse for a relatively large trunk.

This was purchased in a 3-gallon can for $11.99. A healthy plant with a mass of trunks.

I removed some of the smaller trunks on the outside. These are potted up and will become individual trees (in the background). Most of the roots were left with the main tree. I did want to separate the individual trunks because this may cause unnecessary root damage. I trimmed the branches on the inside where the trunks will meet. Then I squeezed the trunks together and bound them with flower tape.

Thinned the top a bit so that one or two leaders are left on each trunk. Eventually these will be wired down from the main fused trunk in a weeping style.

Here's the close up of the "new" trunk. I think there are 7 of them together all around 3/8" give or take. Now I just need to wait and see what happens.

If you wanted you could add a lot more of them. I know if you make a teepee with about 50 of those seedlings in six years you will have a show worthy tree.

dbz12fan,
Is that how your Ficus Sacilifolia in your gallery was produced? Nice job. Do you have examples of other trees you produced this way?

I'll just stick with this for now and see if it recovers. If sucessful, I may do a few more, then bind all of them together to total up to 50

Ha ha I wish that was my tree. That ficus salicifolia is my teachers tree. The price on it is 25000 dollars. He grew that from a cutting and spent 25 years allowing it to grow its trunk.

If you do a searc for "Bonsai Societies of Florida 2003 convention" you will probably be able to find a website on the trees displayed there. The ficus phillipinensis by Jim Vanlandingham is a good example of what you did at a larger scale. He teepeed 50 trees and in six years had them displayed. If I find a picture of it somewhere I will post it.

Geodude .. great start .. next early summer you may want to pot it into a grow container shallower bout 3” deep and the size of the desired canopy .. let it grow a season in the pot training the canopy and if possible let it go into the ground for a few years .
The canopy is formed by bending the trunks to form the basic structure . Once the framework is built let it grow wild for a season or two . If enough humidity is present roots will begin to emerge throughout the canopy and trunks.
Jerry Meislik works with ficus with loads of info at his site..

btw ficus love 100 degree with lots of humidity in full sun…
