Thanks for the comments.
Charles, you are correct. A smaller pot would also help enormously with the leaf reduction. Bonsainut: I am preparing to try to move my collection to the States. This is one of the reasons I have been moving my trees into plastic containers and photographing them. Please contact me near the end of the year. Rene, I will try to remember to post a photo of the first fig with its foilage. In the mean time here is another shohin which is in full leave. The foilage can be reduced a bit more but right now I haven'nt had the time to do the required intensive leaf pruning. Hank Last edited by Hank Miller : 12-Jan-2004 at 04:18 AM. |

And a slightly larger one. Both need a bit of pruning but I have begun to let them grow out a bit.

Hank,
Are these the buurt davii 'nana' variety? If so, they make wonderful shohin bonsai. I have found the only problem with this species is they only put a couple leaves at the end of each branchlet and nowhere else. I guess that is why they fit shohin so well.

Charles, they are not the nana variety. I have no problem with the buds. They occur as expected. The internode distances increase if they are not pruned regularly.

Thanks for the comments. At present I live in Pretoria, South Africa. Both of these varieties are indigenous to the eastern coastal areas. I think that the Natal fig may have been re-classified as ficus thumbergini (not sure if I have spelled it right)
A larger version of the latter is given below. Hank Last edited by Hank Miller : 15-Jan-2004 at 12:01 PM. |
