As far as junipers go....

....this one has some good attributes! The trunk is rather twisty with some radical movement and the flare and nebari is pretty good for a juniper. The trunk does taper albeit slowly at first and then picks up steam as it moves upward.

This is a common procumbens , not to be confused with "nana". This is full sized foliage and rather coarse like San Jose. It does turn to adult foliage much faster than nana though.

Nine months later after aquiring the plant I decide to do a first styling on the tree. I have a good idea of what I'm going to do but somehow I'm not so sure saving the bottom right branch was the thing to do.

My plan all along was to make a bunjin style tree from it. The tree is 14 inches tall and has a 1.5 inch trunk at the base.

Presently it is still in the full branching configuration. I have not removed the bottom branches....yet?

What say you?

Al,

I like the bunjin virt very much. Perhaps you can do this for now, and the left branch can always come off later.

I like it. The only thing I would do is move the top down with slight bend in the trunk . It makes the tree seem more balenced and in harmony.

When I look closely I see that it is a Goofy style. Really, look closely, don't you see him?

Put a 2" block under the viewers left side if you are showing the front making the first bend less horizontal. Naka always said to keep that angle more vertical than horizontal. I think you are on the right path with this tree. I like it.

Because of the movement in the trunk you have, it cries out for bunjin. Sure you could leave it as is and a nice informal upright would be the result but it would blend into the background in your collection.

Go the virt Al I know you will give us something to gasp at.

It has a nice chinese look to it. Here's my two cents, I changed the angle of the trunk 4 degrees to the right.

MattO... now that's quite an odd opinion? I personally like bonsaimeisters idea of leaving the left branch for now and seeing where it goes from there.

Cheers,

Brian
