English Elm Forest

this is an anglish elm forest i collected, i was chewed on for years by cows, and was a sucker from a very large grove .
it was only collected a year ago and as you can see it needs some work but i think it has potential ,
would love some advice from you guys.

Good luck with this. It has a windswept look to it.

Is it a single root system then?

I have to say i've not seen one this size - and then you even managed to get it to live since collection.

Thumbs up

You seem to be doing a good job so far. I would study the trunks in there and go with the ones that have a bit of movement. Pick a front that shows the most character and then think about removing a few trunks that go against the flow. This baby will back bud like mad for you and you should be able to get branches were you need them. Remember as it fills out you will have to consider taking out a few to open it up a bit.

Below is a pic of an elm that belongs to a friend of mine. I hope you don't mind me jumping into your thread with it but I thought you might find it interesting. This one had been growing in an old wall were a gardener came along every few years and choped it down. Then my mate came along and chopped the wall down a bit and got the tree. Worth the effort.

Regards

Ian

hi guys thanks for the intrest ,
the root system was a single t-bar sucker from about a forty foot parent tree , i managed to get a fair bit or fine root with this one but seing as it's only been in it's pot just under a year i'm not game to have a look at the root system yet , think i might leave it in it's tub for at least another six months and then have a glance and a chop, eventualy i hope to rid it of the T-bar root system, but have no ideas where to start ,thats where you guys come in ,the root is actualy hidden about 1 - 1/2 inches uder the soil

the more i think about it the more i like the windswept idea
eventualy i hope to plant this baby onto a peice of slate, any one got any good ideas as to what to make a good solid edging for the slate out of ? clay just seems to wash away.
regards
odin.
