English Elm Airlayer Seperated

Some of you may remember this tree from a thread last year. I aquired it about three years ago now. It was a sucker from a large (but unfortunately half dead) Elm that had to make eay for a gas pipeline.
I initiated the air layer in April this year and today was the day to seperate the air layer from the old roots. I use a pair of ratchet loppers to do the job as i find that that gives me a nice clean cut.

Here is a few pictures.

The original threat from last year!

Here is the old root. Yes root, as ther was only one large root that circled the trunk in a very unattractive way and did not support the tree in the soil. It has sent up a good few suckers so I have potted it up in a hope to get some more material. It may even make a little raft style tree.

Here is the tree in its grow box. I have used a well sifted, corase mixture of composed bark, akadama, vemiculite and grit (3-5mm) to pot up the tree. Most of this years new growth has been trimmed back so as not to stress the new roots too much. It will be left to grow in peace now, at least until next spring.
I think it was worth the effort.

Regards

Mike

Nice job. Elm is looking healthier. Look forward to seeing the new nebari once the roots have hardened off.

Definitely worth the effort Mike. You've got a very good looking tree there now.

Regards,

Chris.
