English Elm

Hi all

I thought I post some pictures of my English Elm (ulmus procera) for comment and help.

This tree was collected from a hedgerow that had to make way for a gas pipeline. It was a sucker on a large stump and removing it was a doddle. It has spent 2 years in the ground and 2 years in a grow box (that finally fell to bits last week when i tried to move it in to the greenhouse).

So, new box and time to update my photo record of this tree.

Since the tree was put in the grow box, the leaves have reduced well and the ramification is getting there. (ignore the lowest branch for the moment, i have not started work on that yet)

One big problem is the roots on this tree. It has one large root that eminates from the side of the tree and runs in a semicircle araound the base. It flatly refuses to put out any other roots from the trunk. Any suggestions? Would a turniquet work to induce further roots?

Anyway here are some pics. for scale, the box it is in is 60 cm (2foot) x 35 cm (1foot and a bit).

Comments and suggestion very welcome

Mike

Mike,
Don't you just love English elm?
You're doing fine with this one, although I doubt that it's necessary to keep it in a greenhouse over winter in Leicester. As for that lowest branch.... Off with it! Too long, wrong place. Best to lose it now rather than later, to minimise the scar.

Here is my virtual. I removed the lower branch that you said to ignore then tilted the next branch above it down a bit to compensate. I also tileted the tree to put the apex over the base. And I lowered the apex a bit.

Good idea. Gotta lose that low pocket branch. It's not even in a good place for an escape branch, you don't need to build thickness there on the inside of a curve.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks for your comments. Isn't it funny how a photo shows up this branch as so obviously wrong. It WILL come of next spring.
Most of my trees go in to my unheated greenhouse over the winter, not so much to protect them from frost as to keep off the worst of the rain. It also extends my growing period by a month or so.

dbz12fan,
Thanks for the virtual. I have tried tilting the tree and it keeps heeling back over there is no roots on that side to anchor it down, hence my desperate plea for anyone to tell me how to get this tree to throw out more roots.

The tree grows vigourously enough to attempt a low level air layer, but i would like to hear from someone who has done this before on an english elm. They are quite hard to come by here in England (most were wiped out by dutch elm disease) and I would hate to loose it.

Mike
