English Boxwood
You may remember a year ago, I removed a bunch of boxwood shrubs from my front yard and threw them into platic tubs. Today at an open house at the nursery that sponsors my club, we worked on one of those boxwoods. This is member John Miller (right) and I.

This boxwood is over 20 years old, 20 inches high, and 3inches across at the base. You will see wire, and also what appears to be some crossing branches. John utilized some of the cut off branches as wedges to get the branches to space properly. Boxwood this old is very difficult to wire in place. It still has a ways to go, but it is off to a good start.

Hi Ralph, you are so right.. it is off to a good start. Nice lines and balance. Boxwoods are slow but very rewarding after about 10 years in training. It's my understanding that the English boxwood is slower than the other standard boxwoods. I like the lighter shade of green these exhibit. ![]()

Thanks guys.
It rewards me much now, and I have several others from that same hedge row to work on. Incidentally, if someone in the local Dallas area wants one to work on, and has something to trade message me. I will be checking back in with you guys once the limbs have set, and it has put out more foliage. As far as this guy goes for now, it's just enjoy, and regular maintenance. On the others, I will be having some looks at them and trying to figure out how to get those started. I may post pics up here and ask for a virtual, we will see how they go. So don't be surprised if you see another thread soon with more raw boxwood pics. I truly enjoyed this day and the mentoring I got from John on this one. Hopefully there will be more of these times in the future. Last edited by Ralph : 24-Feb-2004 at 07:36 PM. |
