Elm With Fall Colors

Hi

A few weeks ago we had a lecture about suiseki at the local bonsai club. At the end of the lecture the speaker made two tokonamas. One with a large tree and one with a small tree. He looked at the trees the members had brought with them and sure enough he picked my little chinese elm. They made a few pictures of the setup and I thought I'd show you one. Looks cool doesn't it ? Who can guess what the stand is made of ? :-)

regards, René

The stand looks like it is made of bamboo dyed black?

The artifacting is a little coarse, so I can't make out the photo very well, but it looks like either mid or possibly late 6th century Echizen lacquerware, developed when a craftsman in Kawada was ordered to re-coat the crown of the 26th Emperor, Keitai, who was the Prince of Japan at that time. The craftsman chose to re-coat with black lacquer, whose rich lustre deeply impressed the Emperor and led him to promote the local industry.

Or... it could be a couple of videocassette cases glued together.

Don't know which!

Regards,

Matt

Big Smile

I particulary like the brown mountain shoe on the right even though I figure it could add to the composition if the shoe lace would be properly tied...

:-)

OK, OK, I should know better than trying to post anything seriuous in this place :-) Matt's on the spot. The stand is two video cassette boxes but they're not glued together.. You got to improvise when you don't have a stand around.

Oh, and that's not a mountain shoe but a 20000 dollars worth distant ski-resort with added ski-lift and beautiful glacier that glows in the dark suiseki. I'll bed you won't find any stones that fancy in the states !!

:-)) René

Sorry René, but you wont "bed me", I'm getting married next month and I don't usually bed with people I meet in the Internet!

Nice elm!
