The Elephant, Sumo Ficus Burt Davyi Nana

I call this one the elephant for obvious reasons. I purchased it last December for a workshop with Suthin Sukosolovisit. When it is a bring your own tree workshop, I try to bring a tree that fits the artist's specialty. This tree, being a shohin sumo, fits Suthin's specialty perfectly.

The lowest right branch is probably too large for the tree, but foliage will cover most of it. Plus, growing a new branch in that spot would not be easy. As with most trees, this one is apicacally dominant, so growing a lower branch will be harder than growing a new upper one. The upper ones would already have a headsup on the new branch if I decided to replace it. Therefore, I am leaving it as is.

This photo was taken before the workshop-

This photo shows what it looked like after the workshop. I decided to leave the left hand side large branch for that time because the workshop was in December, and it needed some foliage to survive the winter.

This photo shows the tree as of today. If the lowest left hand branch thickens up over the next year, this is a canidate for show at next year's convention. I do not want to show it too early, though.

Comments, questions, suggestions, pot suggestions?

charles, nice tree. i don't so much have a pot suggestion as i do a potting suggestion. IMHO, rotate the tree counterclockwise 10 degrees and bring you soil level to where i have drawn the red line. there is something about the open space on the left side of the nebari that i just don't care for. none the less, this is a great tree and you did a wonderful job with it.

Yeah, but then you'd have to rename it "elephant buried up to the top of his trunk."

(Very nice tree!)

Wow, there are too elephants in there. The one I saw was different from the one Carl mentioned. I saw the trunk as the heavy right branch and it was an elephant that was sitting down. I like Carl's idea for the elephant much better. What I plan to do to fix the holes is either place a rock underneath the hollow or plant moss to cover them and the reverse taper.

charles, a rock would be a good idea too, i didn't even think of it. having that one root jumping out over a rock as if it had too in order to reach the ground will be a nice touch. keep us informed as to your progress.
