"I seem to recall someone once telling me that Boxwoods are hard to back bud."

Who told you that? They backbud like crazy--if they're healthy and the pruning is done properly...

I worked on a similar boxwood this weekend (though it could only be substantiated that this one was 64 yrs old), but sadly I don't have any pictures to share. (Camera battery was dead.)

In the second picture, the lower left branch bothers me. With it gone, I don't think there'd be a problem bringing the crown down slightly to compensate for the visual heft that the branch would take with it.

Thanks for the post Ms. Vic.

Mark..... no comment. The individual was obviously misled themselves.

Jim..... He is legendary for may things. Some better than others. But still.... he is legendary. (grin)

Wayne..... Well, I can't say that I don't disagree with the fact that the branch seems a little disturbing at the moment. I want to finish the tree off, and then evaluate it. But personally I am thinking we ought to at least shorten it. Elimination is not a possibility. If he decided he didn't like it, he might carve it out, but he won't elminate it. Also we are talking about redesigning the tree, and largely removing the rear trunk, which can't be seen from the front at all. Or greatly reducing it's presense. We are going to talk more about it when I am done with it.

It's interesting all the way around. He doesn't get stuck on a design or idea, his thinking is very fluid.

Kind regards to all,

Victrinia

Why would the branch fit in, in its current location, better dead than alive?

Well alrighty then.... I finished this last weekend. But I didn't have my camera, so I went back today and photographed the boxwood.

We did a little restyling to it. And Dan decided we could shorten that branch I was concerned about. He wasn't concerned about it being too long, but agreed it would also be fine if it was shorter, so it was pruned back to the point I liked.

I have to say... I LOVE this tree....

Kind regards,

Victrinia

(laugh)

I don't disagree at all, having found the beauty in the beast. I would prefer this tree in a much more masculine pot as well. Size is fine.... but darker (I don't care if it's glazed or unglazed) and a masculine form would be better.

But hey... you love the thing that counts at the moment.... that fantastic tree. Dan and I are mumbling about changing the front anyway, so I'll share your opinion along with mine. He'll appreciate the input. He is becoming intrigued with the goings-on in this place. (smile) And believe me. The man is nothing if not decisive. He gets a thought and it gets done. There isn't a lot of hemming and hawing around. Sometimes he may wait years (mostly because he has to much to do), but when inspiration hits, he moves with great alacrity.

When he was carving away a portion of the crown this weekend, that emanated from that rear trunk, he said it was "kind of sad" to be removing it. But followed it with... "One has to be obedient to the fact that bonsai is not a static art form. It is a process of change."

Yours most kindly,

Victrinia

Well, M'lady...

I'd like add to my WOW!...what a future for that box!

Plenty of time for pot selection...

For now, Victrinia, just enjoy what is there...and dream the wonder of what's down the road a piece...
