eglwyseg; looking for inspiration.

I feel quite fortunate to live near the welsh hills and mountains and this morning i took advantage of this and headed out to near eglwyseg which is a large vein of carboniferous limestone that is north of llangollen and flanks ruabon mountain. it is popular with climbers, fossil hunters and was once mined for lead and silver. it is only thirty minutes from home and today i went hunting for inspiration for bonsai in the rock grown style. A few of my root over rock trees in training are over some really nice hard detailed limestone from this area. this first pic is of the vein as you approach, please note the ruins of the 13th century castel dinas bran on the hill on the left.

most of the trees here are common hawthorn, nibbled tight by sheep. some great potential yamadori here! heres one 12" wide mound of hawthorn. i imagine some of these are quite old as some have quite major trunks.

Gday Andrew!

Thanks once again for a very inspirational assortment of pictures from a very beautiful part of the world. There's something about #27859 that keeps me going back to it...

I would just ask one thing: could you give us some idea as to how to pronounce "Eglwyseg"? (I still have my tonsils, if that helps.)

Thanks again.

Fly.

hi flybri, pronounce it just as you read it .... or so i,m led to believe. i,m an english man living in wales and unfortunatly and shamefully can only understand "roadsign" welsh. fly bri, joanie, the greatest thing about this area is how accessable it is. I,ve just invested in one of those karrimor backpack/toddler carrier things and a rather pleasant sunday morning was spent exploring with my four year old, my 18 month old and the fat dog whilst my wife had a lie-in. i had planned on collecting some stones for sakei etc but in the end my son persuaded me to bring home a sheep skull we stumbled across. the wife went absolutly berserk cheers guys, andrew

We hunt in the same places!you must think smarter to find those elusive juniperus communis though!(and collecting them is a 2-3 yr job in the uk)
