Collected these back in '02. Hauled the slab up from Kentucky last year. What do you think

Newt, first, it is enjoyable to see someone working with this very intriguing species. A couple of years ago, I saw some pretty nice examples of what can be done with it, but I still think of it as a controversial subject for Bonsai. Back in California, my instructor there insisted Eastern Red Cedar was entirely unsuitable for bonsai. He had a bias against American species and I quickly fell into a position of enjoying seeing him proven wrong so I'm always tickled when I see someone choosing to work with this species. I have a few, but they are still "material in the making".

As for these, my immediate reaction is that they look pretty raw and need quite a bit more work on the branches. Our instructor in Cal. used to require that we wire every branch, whether we thought they needed it or not and my impression is that these trees would benefit greatly from that. They are WAY ahead of my Eastern Red Cedars, so, believe me, I'm NOT claiming I would have done better then this generally very artistic treament. I do think, however, that more branch refinement with more downward angled and horizontal movement in the branches would be an appropriate next step.

Fred,
You are right. The branches have bounced back since the wire has been removed. The photo back drop was new and just trying it out. The apex of the tallest tree was let grow upwards (caught allot of slack for that) because that is what trees do in nature (siding with Walter here). It may change in the future though. These trees were actually only collected back in the spring of '02 so they are still in the development stages.

Vance Hanna has a stunning E.R.C.!!! Wish I could post it here for you. Thanks for your thoughts!!!!
