Earl's Green Island Ficus

This seems to be ficus week so here is a new one I bought at NW Bonsai last month. I have done nothing but re-pot it and trim out about 2/3 of the foilage. I used this pot only because when I went to trim the roots, the tap roots ran so deep I was afraid to cut them any shorter. Pic #2 is an idea for the future, but I would love some ideas and comments. NW Bonsai used red rock for ground cover so thought I would too, but it has to go.

Here is a possible future plan. While I bought it for the wierd trunk, I am bothered by how much of it is exposed with branching. So I also wonder about shortening up the tree completely but not sure how to do it.

Suggestions please!!

Well, Earl, this ain't gonna win any "most creative virtual" contest, but here's one possibility - maybe the obvious possibility for the tree.

(Yeah, I did lose those too lower exposed roots. Sorry.)

Alright, coming back for a fresh look I see that I just turned your tree into a friggin' mallsai.

Sorry!!!!

Well, at least you know what not to do.

Regarding the aesthetics of red lava: Hey, careful there! I use that stuff on all my trees!

Not that I'd show them with red lava on top. Not that this it would be the greatest of the defects if I did.

This has a lovely trunkline and the root spoils it, the root has no interesting bends at all. the tree has no other air roots and it looks out of place. it isnt the right shape to be covered in air roots anyway. this fig's feature is the dramatic line of the trunk and it works, so why mess with it..IMO only of course

Oh btw - i do like air roots on the right trees, this aint one

My thought is to find a rock that would fit between the roots and give you a root-over-rock style. I am not in love with the look as is, but do feel the roots aid something. I realize finding a rock that is going to fit just right is NOT going to be easy...but it might be worth the try!!

OK I tried to do a virtual, and it is very bad, but hopefully if the idea has merit, someone with good virt skills could come forth!

I agree with adding a rock to the base. It would use the roots that are there instead of sacrificing them and strengthen the base by making it look much larger. The other alternative is, of course, to get rid of the two extra roots and go with the visuals provided.
