dwarf sumo oak

This shot was with a night background and flash. The fresh lime-sulfer job is much too bright, especially under the flash lighting conditions. Tomorrow I'll darken it and try again.
Height from pot rim is 9.5 inches. Pot by Mike Hagedorn.

Hi Mike i'd like to see a day time shot and ask about the history of the dead wood area. I am totally blown away with what i see so far.
Kind Regards Ash

I agree with Ash. Would like to see a daytime pic but it looks great so far, i'm sure the sulphur wouldnt look as bright during the day and a direct flash on it.

Ash and Evan, here's a shot taken this morning, about 8 am Pacific time. The tree is back-lit by filtered sun at a high angle from the left. I tweaked it a little with Photoshop.
I bought this tree "as collected" in a wood box about 12-14 years ago.
About the deadwood. What you see on the lower left of the trunk is a stone fitted into a hollow area of the trunk that was unsightly. It has a texture similar to the real deadwood, and has been limesulfered. The real deadwood that starts on the lower right of the trunk is natural. The most thats been done is a light sanding years ago before the first lime sulfer application.
I'm going to darken the lime sulfer to give it a more natural appearance. I'll do that by making a wash with diluted black tempura paint and applying coats until the desired effect has been achieved.

In this image the lime-sulfer has been darkened. The time was about 3pm with the sun on the left side and the flash used as a fill light.

2 images here. The first is a macro of a portion of the deadwood, and the second is a macro of the stone embedded in the hollow of the trunk.

Thumbs up Got my vote

The texture of the deadwood and rock are so incredibly similar. But even if you had not coloured the rock Mike the design would still be stunning.
Kind Regards Ash
