Dwarf Mock Orange

I went to target and found this for $2.50. It says it is a Wheeler's Dwarf Mock Orange.

Here is a before pic.

Trader:

I have heard of three ways to reduce the leaf size of deciduous trees.

1. Restricting the roots in a bonsai pot will do it all by itself over time.

2. You can defoliate a tree and the new leaves will be smaller than the originals. Caution: this should only be done on healthy trees.

3. Some trees will grow smaller leaves in brighter light. So, if you want smaller leaves, increase the available light.

I am not familiar enough with the Mock Orange to know which of these methods would be best. Not all methods work on all trees. Perhaps some of the experts here can shed a little more light (no pun intended) on the subject.

It look like you have some sort of Pittosporum, probably Pittosporum tobira , aka Japanese Mock Orange. It is not a common bonsai subject, but has definitely been done. The plant you have has had the center pruned out of it, so you should think about back-budding as well as leaf reduction. It could use some more branches and some more movement overall. Good luck...
