Developing Branches
I would appreciate it if I could clear up some confusion on my part. When developing branches on a tree that has been chopped how does one proceed? It seems to me that one would want to choose the first two branches and then remove all other growth. By doing this and waiting for new branches there will be a difference in branch thickness from the first two branches up toward the apex, with each tier of branches thinner than the proceeding branch.
Am I correct in my thinking? Thanks for all help. |

You are referring to a deciduous tree, right? Your concern to have branches of diminishing girths toward the crown of the tree is absolutely correct. However, there is no need to remove all the other branches. As you build the new trunk with your leader, you will allow the lower branches to grow unhindered, while holding back the upper ones a little more. I have a tree in that very process. You can see the full article here.
