Hello Bass,
you might include in your description that the desert rose is also poisonous. Yours is lovely. susieq |

James,
I noticed that it will only bloom if it went through a cool spell. If it's in a spot with high light and it goes through a cool temperature down to 60 deg. It will bloom immediatly. It usually only blooms when in the summer. I guess the long day light hours will let it bloom. Susie, didn't know that it is poisonous. I guess I can't eat it... Are the flowers the poisonous part? Bass

Mine comes indoors since I'm in a colder climate, and it looses its leaves. It's still bare now. I put it out in the sun and soon it is growing new leaves and then flowers.

poisonous
Greetings Bass,
I don't know about the flowers but the sappy stuff they leak when cut, might cause skin irritations and is very bad to ingest, not that any right thinking adult human would do that, but children and pets should be watched. I have two very large desert roses in planters out in the yard. They are so large that I didn't even try to move them when it got cold this winter. We get the occasional frost warnings here and I pull the tropical bonsai inside overnight but not those guys.....and they didn't seem to suffer for it. Blooming like crazy right now and bloom all summer long. They look very nice in bonsai pots but I have a hard time thinking of a succulant as a bonsai. I just enjoy them as colorful additions to the back yard. Best wishes, susieq |

The whole plant is the poisonous part. Beautiful plant, Bass. Mine is a couple inches shorter. Actually I have 3, my largest is the one a couple inches shorter than yours. But mine is fatter. The first one I ever saw, I was in the Peace Corps in Niger. There was a desert rose (Adenium) at a crossroads on the research farm where I worked. It was about 2.5 m tall, and the base was about 1 m wide. I asked about it. No one knew where it was from or what it was called. It was only abut 4 years ago that I again saw one. I bought it. It was labled with it's name, so I could finally look up information aobut it.

I visited Vietnam two months ago and they have Desert Roses everywhere; in regular pots and trained as bonsai. I talked to some people and they tell me that Desert Roses love the sun and hot weather. If the weather is hot, humid, and sunny enough, it may bloom for many months. If it gets too cold, it will go through the trauma of loosing its leaves but will recover as soon as it gets warm again, or a combination of sun and not-so-cold temperatures. When cutting a branch, clean the cutting tools and wash your hands because, as said above, the sap is poisonous to other plants and humans. If you cut a branch and you expect a lot of rain then seal the wound as it may rot.
