Daytona Bonsai

In the spirit of Al's bonsai nursery reviews, I'd like to describe my recent visit to Jason Schley's bonsai nursery in Daytona Beach.

I was able to escape a vacation wtih my in-laws long enought to visit Jason. His nursery is easy to find, once you know where to look. From Orlando it was I4 east to I95 north, exit at LPGA Blvd, the turn right on Ridgewood. It's on the right in less than a block.

Jason has been there for about 7 months, so he's just getting started. The space is relatively small (about 1/4 acre), but he's got some great material. Most is not completly styled, and some of his best stuff is rough stock just waiting for the right buyer.

Jason has alot of tropicals (no surprise) - ficus, azaleas, schefflera. More surprisingly, he has alot of grape material.

Finally, I have another of his junipers. Then a massive podocarpus that Jason has as a result of the hurricanes over the summer. This thing is five feet tall. I can just manage to give it a big hug and link my hands. He'll have to explain his plans for it. An then, Jason himself, with a hackberry I believe.

I had a great morning. Jason is a very personable host - has a story for each and every tree there. Very knowledgable. He is shipping me a pond cypress and an Ilex, and sending a cascade podocarpus to my mum. Definitely worth a stop if you're heading to Florida.

Cheers
Brian

Wow - great nursery review, Brian - and great nursery, Jason!

Sounds like a good time.

You might be surprised at my favorite piece of material among those shown: #17314, the thin, towering ficus. If I lived in a climate where ficus was happy outdoors, I'd buy that one in a heartbeat. It is literally the first piece of material that I have seen that I could imagine being able to train in the Lingnan "towering tree" form. (For those of you who have access to Hu Yunhua's book Chinese Penjing, look at #57 and #128. The former of those two trees is Lu Xueming's "Holding up the Sky", and is now part of the Pacific Rim collection.)

With my best regards to all,
Carl

Forgot this photo of a buttonwood. Wish I could grow those, but I'm too cold.
