Daiza for shohin olive (surprise image added later)

I was looking around a store in my town than sells upscale Chinese artifacts. I spotted what looked to be the right daiza for my shohin olive.
The height including daiza is about 7 inches.

Mike
Edit: Here's the olive and my "pet" jay, about to take a piece of walnut from my hand. I wasn't fast enough to catch him taking the walnut. Maybe I'll get lucky another time.

That olive is indeed impressive, and i think the pot suits it well. (Is there a faint mountain image on the side of the pot? very nice). I'm not so sure about the daiza though, not with this tree anyhow. It just doesn't, to me, fit with the rustic looking pot and ancient looking mediterranean tree. It appears a little too wide and a bit colourful.

Thats a fantastic looking olive, nice pot too. I take it 'daiza' refers to the stand, which I'm not sure of.

Gorgeous tree Mike.
I have a few great sumo material purchased last year from Roy Nagatoshi. I wanted to make them bigger, but after seing your shohin (and Robert Stevens' shohin), I think I will go for creating the world's smallest olive this year.
Olives are perfect for this size since they can withstand a soil that is temporarily dry, a definite possibility in the case of a mame bonsai.

Correct me if I am wrong,
Attila

Edit: contemplating the virtues of mame bonsai, I will be able to take it with me every day to my office as my pet tree. I am sure my co-workers would get a kick out of that.

Hi Attila
Olives are really great bonsai material, no matter what size you want.
Speaking of Roy, his nursery was the first bonsai nursery I ever visited back in the pre-1975 days.
By all means go for the littlest olive bonsai. Here are the dimensions of this sumoshohin: 3 3/4" tall from pot rim, and 6 3/4" around the base.
I'm one that worries about dry soil and it's adverse effects. I have heard that in the hot So. Cal climate, there can be a summer dormancy for olives, which I guess to be a protective reaction.
Re. taking the "pet" to the office, I think I'd want a different one for each day.

Mike

great sumo!

HI Dr.Mike,
What a delightful mame! I am very impressed. Congrats on the style and the pot.
However I have to agree with Alisar, that the daiza just doesn't do it for me. A bit to fussy for such a tree. Simple chow type legs might be more fitting.
best
