Cypress Forest (Raft)

A friend of mine asked me to post a few of his trees for comment and critique. He is open to virtuals and suggestions.

The first of his trees is this Cypress group. It was made by removing the branches on one side of a single tree, applying a little rooting hormone and laying it side down in the soil. Those who dont know, this is called a raft planting. Those who do know.....man this is a great example!!!

The forest is (I am guessing) about 5 years in training. It is near 20" tall at its tallest tree. The rocks on either side of the forest were used to help hold the planting in the tray.

Any comments or questions about its history, dimensions and training will be forwarded to him, and will get back to you as soon as possible.

Great forest. No comments except (and this is a purely personal opinion.) I would get rid of the rocks. I love natural penjing type settings and have made several myself but the rocks need to be part of the composition...trees hanging over rocky bluffs, sitting on mountain sides, etc. These aren't needed with the great trees. Maybe some more moss when it's shown, or some type of brown rock dressing instead of gray and you have a masterpiece.

I agree with earl about the rocks.
Cypress are native to wetlands and there arent many rocks in the swamps around here. I would suggest that look at a few pictures of swamps and marshes and try to draw some insperation from them.

I would also thin out the lower extremities of the taller trees to bring out their height and show differentation from the larger and smaller ones.

I am far from an expert so this is from an amatures point of view.

Great comments guys.

Earl,

Dave and I talked alot about Penjing today actually, so it is funny you mention it. His collection is diverse in the fact that he has about equal numbers of penjing and bonsai. There is actually a big difference between the two (IMHO).

Whidn,
I should mention that this is Cham. pisifera (false cypress). I like the composition, tho the next repot will probably not have the rocks hanging over the pot, if he chooses to keep them. I do know that he only started the rocks in the pot to actually hold the raft in place. I like them myself. Here in noreast Mn, it is common to see trees growing from croppings of rock such as this, the glaciers did a nice job of cutting deep into the rock here.

He does thin out the foliage alot in the spring and has no photo record of its history up until today, which is unfortunate. A virtual repot is on the way.....one of the things he has asked me to do. I will post it when completed this week.
