Cypress ... coming on nicely
This is a bit of a bad picture. But the same again really ... in realtime this is a really nice tree, the picture does it no justice. also the nebari or the surface roots are of an excellent quality.
It was purchased as Potensai, for a mere £10 about 2 years ago ... some thinning out has been done and it's been pretty much left to thrive. It's going in a pot this year, nothing too shallow or too deep! and no doubt it will be round in shape. Since the photo was taken a lot of the branches have been trained down a little so they arn't shooting for the sky so much. An updated photo will follow soon. Anyway, let me know what you think ... Re: Cypress ... coming on nicely
This looks like a false cypress. Probably Chamaecyparis pisifera "Boulevard"
I like the way you have taken the picture at night, because it eliminates a busy background, and makes it a nice dark color. I have had one of these as a bonsai for about 10 years. It's a similar size, and it was 'pruned down' from nursery stock. This is the species that was pooh-poohed by the bonsai master as not a good choice. In any case, it does require some special care. Repotting later, right at the end of spring. And pinching should be done when the new growth pushes and before it hardens off. You can tell because it will be very soft at that time. If you pinch too soon the growth will tear rather than break cleanly. Don't cut the foliage with scissors. You can of course, prune twigs with scissors, but any cut foliage will turn brown and that browning will tend to work its way back to a branch union. These trees are very similar to cousin Hinoki in their cultural requirements. They like the sun but at the same time appreciate some cool breezes and an environment that is humid. So, if you can't move to the beach or a forest glen, you might provide some cover during the hottest part of summer, just to keep the roots from drying out or getting hot. This looks like a fun tree to work with. Thin the crown a bit so that you don't lose the weaker growth lower down. The thing about the false cypresses is you will rarely get backbudding on the trunk, so nurse those interior branches. I can't tell from the photo, but the trunk looks like it is nearly straight enough (at least from this angle) to be a formal upright, and if so the styling might be similar to a Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria) form, with the foliage sitting somewhat on top of the branches in pads as these trees tend to both do anyway. There is a photo of a cryptomeria in the ***GALLERY*** just type Crypto in the search engine there. I have also a postcard I have somewhere of another cyrptomeria in a somewhat natural, less refined form that looks a lot like you have here. If I run cross it again, I will let you know. The boulevard variety won't reach the level of refinement of the cryptomeria because of the limitations in backbudding and the character of the foliage, but it can produce a nice, open tree with some interesting qualities. Other considerations are that you want to keep the apex light to let light down into the tree and avoid having twigs become too large (as they tend to do when carrying too much foliage) The tree will readily sacrifice lower branches to keep that crown nice and dense and pack on foliage right on the ends of branches, so it is a struggle. Regards, Matt

Re: Cypress ... coming on nicely
Matt.
Wow, thanks for you comments matt! ... had the treebay man himself I'm honoured lol! ... I'm pretty shure that it isn't a false cypress or rather a Chamecaeparis! ... I have alway struggled with it's true family, but looking through several books I think it's a japanese Cypress ... the bark is very brown, and the foliage is almost juniper like! ... check back again soon because I took some pics of it again last night and one of them was a close up. thanks again. Re: Cypress ... coming on nicely
I think we'd need to get about 10X closer for a positive ID, but here is a Boulevard.
from http://www.paulnoll.com/tree-Blvd-Cypress.html Sawara Cypress, somewhat similar, but also Chamaecyparis has a finer foliage.
