Re: cypres
Hi Rene
I think the silence is due more to the fact that cypress, particularly leyland cypress, is traditionally thought of as poor bonsai material. Well i say rubbish - i have one approx 2 ft high formal upright leyland and i must say it puts up with a lot of torture and always bounces back. The foliage always responds to pinching by growing faster and i normally have difficulty in keeping up with it during the summer. Its not finished yet by a long way so i wont post a picture as it would be shot down in flames. Your restyle is definately an improvement and i actually quite like the result especially once the foliage bulks out somewhat and develops into the proper foliage triangle. One tip i recently learnt was to die the raffia dark brown so that it doesnt distract from the tree - something that would certain benifit the viewer of this example.Rgds James |

Re: cypres
James,
Thanks for the answer ! I'd rather have 10 people telling me it's absolutely crap than this silence... (wow, can you have silence in a newsgroup ?) I know it's not an easey species for Bonsai. I started this one when I was doing Bonsai for about 1 month, and I thought I could make trees from everything. But now I have started it I want to "finish" it too, or at least making it showable. The foliage will have to develop a lot, but that will come with time. I agree about the raffia, I have seen people applying black tape to hide it. Well, I'll do that on my next tree. thanks again, René |

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME

Re: cypres
Hi Rene... Do not take the silence to personal. Many of the members of this list are newbie to novice. I as a novice do not feel I know enough about Literati to comment. I can say I like what I see and where my mind tells me this tree may go, but again its my 2 cents and not much more. There are certain styles that are harder to visualize at the beginning.
Plus be happy, sometimes you get replies from those who do not know from where they speak! ![]()

Re: cypres
I have been busy posting my own stuff. But I will throw my 2 cents in. I like the tree better now that you took some bends out. What I would do IMO, is to bend the top harder. Make it come right back on itself. Then let the top hang down a little further and sweep the foliage out into a fan shape. I will try to do a virtual to show you what I mean. But,..... I got to get back to work on the stand I am building for shohin bonsai.. Later dudes,Bonsaial

Re: cypres
i dont know with this one!
my thoughts at present would be to thicken the trunk as it need character...maybe a different planting angle also might help with the design. the foliage would need to be developed over time but i think you know that! Its a young tree so i'd just see how it goes over the next 12 months etc and see what happens! G

Re: cypres
I really like the literati. If I did anthing at all, it would be to cut the foliage back from the tip about half ways and let it thinken up. That would emphasize the sparseness more

Re: cypres
I'm trying to learn how to do virtuals so thought I would practice on yours. I would revise my anwer above a little and rather than shorten the foilage, take some more off, bend the trunk, sort of like my poor rendition.
