Critique On A Cascade Juniper

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for the great info I've gleaned from lurking about the site these last few weeks.

This juniper is the first tree I've styled. As you can see, it's still in a training pot and the area just above the soil line hasn't been styled at all yet. I'd appreciate any comments, criticisms, or hints y'all could provide.

Thanks,
ewok

To achieve an effective cascade you need to provide more movement in the cascade branch. At the moment it looks very straight and not very convincing. You probably need some heavier wire and wire the cascade branch again and put a few bends into it. That is a good place to start for this cascade.

Hi ewokfarmer

Its a nice little starter tree you have got there.

I agree with David, the branch is a bit static and would benefit from some movement. You have plenty of options with this branch due to the wise forethought (or lucky accident ) of retaining most of the side branches.

I am sure you will get a few good virtuals from forum members to give you some inspiration.

Best of luck with your tree and welcome to the forum.

Mike

Nice job mkonig,

But it still lacks a little something, I think another interpretation of "movement" will help here. How about "dimensionality"? Lurking about the site for the last few weeks I've seen that beginners (like myself) tend to forget that they can and must work in 3 dimensions. Leave the trunk visible, but don't splay all the side branches out directly to either side, move some benind and above as well. That will give it a more believable feel.

There's my 2 cents, I don't quite feel priveledged enough (nor do I have adequite software) yet to make a virtual, but I hope I made a little sense and helped out.

Thanks and goodluck ewok!

The first thing that needs to be done to immediately improve the tree is to prune the tail branches to a suitable length for the placement on the branch. The ones near the top should be heavier and longer, and gradually get smaller and lighter in visual weight as you move down the tail. Some of the branches near the crown are less that 50% smaller than the branch right after it down the tail.
