WOWOWWOW I didn't even notice it!!!!! That is amazing pick up Geezerman.

That is the best way to start in Bonsai. Get some cheap material to work on and learn as much as you can from them.

I'm now tempted to say leave that branch where it is and don't chop.

You should also try take cuttings from it..and dry out the berries to get the seeds ,another cheap way to producing some good bonsai (ok it might take a while but what u got to lose!!)

abtract thinkers

Clay,
you and I are alot alike I think. I am an abstract thinker, and saw that from straight off, and I even thought to myself, there's one for Clay to draw.

Freakwent,

I would look at this one for a few weeks before doing anything. Visit and re-visit it. It is easier to see things when you do this. Jot down some notes during each look at it, features you like etc. Then each time, you see something different, add it, then look again at the stuff you wrote down, you may feel differently.

The scar and appendage are definitely features worth building around.

Cotoneaster and many barberry have the unique qualities of being dense with branches and foliage, it will be a chore to sort thru them all. I have a barberry that looked less female like than yours.... but loads to search thru.

This will bring back to the basics, picking the final height, taper all that jazz. An example of my trial...barberry

Paul

Roboku,
Yes, I do plan on getting a couple of cuttings for a possible group planting in the future. I better go get those berries, I think the sparrows are having a feast on them right now.

Paul,
I have a good 5 months to think about what to do. I didn't disturb the roots when I repotted (into a larger pot), so I don't have to take anything off of the top yet. I checked out your link, nice taper and movement in that trunk! I go for the second pic for your front, Earl was right. And those growing baskets are perfect. I thought the soil would fall right through the mesh. Do you line it with sphangum moss or spanish moss or anything to prevent spillage?
