Cotoneaster Horizontalis

Here's a Cotoneaster Horizontalis I picked up at Frank's Nursery and Crafts for a mere $4. There are two trees in there and the main tree has nice root spread. The one thing that I like is the branch emerging from the scar, but I dont know if this would be a bad feature for the "traditional" front of a bonsai.

Come to think of it… and looking at the picture. Two rules are broken, the scar and a forward facing branch. That probably wouldn't be the best choice for the front.

You're right that is a very nice trunk on the main tree. I would say that the branch would have to be chopped off from the front of the tree. This looks like a beautiful scarred area of the tree which makes it aged looked. Very nice indeed. Post some more pics if you do anything to the tree.

Davis,
Thanks, Yeah, I have to clip that one, but it is such an odd feature. I am drawn to it. I have quite a few decisions to make, cascade (obvious) or group planting (?) on a rock since there are two trees and a possible third from one of those lengthy whips. Alas, I have all winter to contemplate that one.

Good luck with this project. Its great to always have options when working with trees.

How do you find working with cotoneasters. It seems everyobe I touch dies on me. I think they must know that I dislike them a lot. > >

lol
Thanks Clay, you almost made me fall out of my chair -- especially since I hadn't noticed that! The day I bought this and took the pics, a rerun of Everybody Love Ramond was on T.V. and it dealt with that subject. Raymond's mother took a sculpting class, created a sculpter that looked like the female anatomy and she didn't even see that. Everybody else did and didn't have the heart to tell her.

Rob,
This one won't flower until our spring, but should have berries now. The other one I bought is a different cultivar and has a ton of berries.

David,
I'm still very new to this. I don't have any established bonsai as of yet. just about 10 trees in growing pots and a couple of saplings and cuttings here and there. That's why I'm buying these bargains. I'll get to see which trees work best for me and get a lot of practice with no great loss.
