Cork Oak From Seed.

Today was fun, we worked the field and dug and cut cork oaks. The vast majority were just pruned root pruned and planted back into the field. About twenty trees went into training pots. Two gallon squats to fifteen gallon squats, all in good bonsai soil. I will get pictures of them tomorrow but here are 3 pictures of the material that we were working with. All very satisfying becaus I have grown this material from seed. First picture the roots.

Cork oak

This is the front of the tree. We worked on trees for 4 hours, out of the 60 or so trees that we touched the great majority had very good root structures and some have exelent roots. We discarded almost nothing.

Glenn..great job on your project with field grown for bonsai.
How long did it take to develope the rootage etc... the trees from seed? Also, I enjoyed your previous thread on field grown.
It brought back memories when i was in Fl working a bonsai nursery. We had acres in benches not much field grown. Too
many available in the wilds..bald cypress, buttonwood, australian pine and more. We shopped the many nurserys in the area and because the were tropicals it didn't take years to develope rootage etc . It was a good learning situation. Hope to one day return to that .. i tink they say it's having your cake and eatin it too. tanks for the post.

Cork oak seeds

Well if you enjoyed that you will love this. Yesterday when I got to work I found four 55 gallon trash cans full of oak seeds and leaves, at least 400 lbs. of seeds. My boss prowdly says that we will process them all and get them all out into the field to grow.

As to age 6years root pruned four times. Dug up bear rooted and pruned four times then replanted.

I am of the opinion that yamadori material can be rewarding but nothing can beat bonsai material that has been grown all of its life specificly for bonsai. Yes! yes! You will beat me to death with the exceptions. Think, show me 300 yamadori under $300.00 of one species of tree, ready for the bonsai container with exelent roots. If it is out there I have never seen it. This spring is exciting as we will be moving about 200 trees out of the field into growing containers.
