Cork bark elm in progress

This cork bark elm was a purchase at the GSBF 2007 convention. It cost about $150, and was dormant when I bought it. The change from it's home in a colder climate, down to San Diego, forced it to bud early. My inability to get to it and work on it, before the buds broke, was very frustrating. Today, I did a lot of branch selection. Being a cork elm, it will pop new buds everywhere, but in particular they seem to pop at the 'knuckles'. A cluster of new buds, if left to grow, creates the reverse taper common in this kind of tree.

The low branch is left to fatten the lower trunk, it will not be part of the final design.

This tree will be about 12" tall when finished.

All of the cuts were refined with a knife and sealed.

Hi Joanie. I love these things. Tough as old boots and beautiful bark.

The best way to propagate these guys is by root cuttings, in fact it's about the only way you'll get corked bark in our lifetime. It's also dead easy ... I get about a 90+% strike rate with root cuttings.

Lookin' good

Joanie,
Very nice tree. It's amazing how quickly that lower trunk will thicken when you let the sacrifice branch grow as long as possible!

Good luck on this one.
