Collecting Another Elm

I've posted on collecting elm before and gotten some feed back that they will tolerate some pretty rough treatment.

I spotted these elms along the same railroad tracks that are actually pretty nice. You can't see it too well, but the first one has a wide base and a great nebari. It's been hacked back for years.

Can I feel comfortable lifting these now? It can't wait because they spray herbicides yearly in this area.

Do not get caught digging these without permission(I know whole ball of wax and a million posts), railroad fees are VERY expensive, and if they feel they need to repair a hole you dig near tracks( you will have NO say in the matter, and it will be their crew of 5-6 guys that fix what you did), your bank account won't be very happy. But if you have permission, and they are going to agent orange the place then by all means dig em up.

i have collected literally hundreds of elms along railroad tracks and have never left a hole or a problem afterwards. you can collect these anytime of the year. why not? nobody wants them alive anyway so why not. i have collected even in the middle of summer and they are real tough. i would say i have had 90% success transplanting them. with a lot of work they can end up being really nice. dont have ne pics but some are really coming along nicely.
