Collected Larix Laricina Shohin

You know those drawings you see in many design books on branching. The one like Mr John Naka has in his BT1 (page 41) with branches going every which way, crossing, turnin, dangling and tangling?

I collected this 7.5 inch Larix laricina from a brush hogged stretch of swamp locally. Many more where this came from btw.

I dont really have any technical questions for you, but want to get your opinion on the material. I obviously have some thinking to do, branch options are at a premium and I think I am lucky in this manner. So many options!

But, there is only a right combination of choices that will make or break this as a bonsai.

I will post updates over the weekend, but I really would like to get your thoughts and opinions on it.

Virtuals would be also appreciated, I know back ground isnt great but, hey, I just pulled this out of a snow bank this morning, and didnt event clean it up.....Hows that for cabin fever!?

I got many of these to work with, this is numero uno.

Paul

another side

a comment on the fatter branches. with the secondary branching off the thicker branches, it will be easy to taper these in a relatively short period of time. wouldnt ya say?

last side.

This was collected two springs ago. I am not going to repot this year, or even next year I dont believe.

I ensured survival by leaving it alone thru two seasons. This year it will get an initial styling. Next year some refinement, and then concideration for a pot.

A view from the top....

You all may have noticed the basket I planted this in. It is an 8inch pond basket, and does wonders for root growth. Much like the planters you see made with wood and screen.

These are found at Home Depot, Menards or the like for 2-3 dollars, depending on size.

Obviously you can see some bar branching. Some trunk crossing etc. I have a couple choices for leaders as well. I am looking forward to working on this.

Will update this as I go along.

I do have a technical question after all.

While going thru the branches I discovered several bar branches and am removing them as I go (not done in this picture). But my questions is this.

the current nr 1 branch is slightly (not much) lower than the back branch. If you turn the tree 1/4 turn, you would see that it looks to be a bar branch.

Is it an accepted rule breaker if you can "hide" the bar by using one of them as a back branch?

I am still wiring and angles, applying a second wire to thicker branches and am contemplating anchors (guy wires) to pull them down.

Still working on it
