Thats a bigger pot than I would recommend. Also there's less soil than I usually use.

But seriously, I feel too many branches are growing upwards. I think you should wire (or use ties) the outtermost branches downwards, creating a "rounder" semi-circular branch structure.

Actually Jeremy, I personally thought that the line of trunk and branches was pretty good . hawthorn has an irregular habit anyway. I put it in this pot last year to continue the reduction of some overly large roots and encourage finner feedre roots \. When I feel it has enough fine roots I will pot it in a suitable size and stlye pot . It is now in a cheep plastic tray . When I pot it up in a display pot I will then pay more attention to the soil level and such.Correction, the first pic was taken yesterday and the second was at collection. The tree is now 15 inches(first pic) and the tree originally as collected was 45 in. (second pic)

Thought I would up date this post . This is a pic after only a month. I did a little wiring and viola. I do have a question and I hope it has not already been answered in previous posts on hawthorns. The question is regarding the branches (lowest two). They are newly started last year and of course they did not flower. Will this be a long wait or just on second year wood as in malus sp.? Anyone??
Regards,
Jonathan

Hi Jemmick,

I am glad to see this survived collection & thanks for the update.

What is going on with that paste / covering on the right side root?

Regards,

Matt

Ah ha. So the greater tonal range of the Viola was obviously a wise choice. No more fiddling for you huh?

That poll about the link between show tunes, bonsai and potentially being attracted to members of the same sex might not be so short-sighted after all...

Treebay, the area you are refering to is a temporary clay replica of a driftwood root (to be made out of epoxy). This will be to hide a horrible scar as a result of removing the upper root on the right side (most easily visible in pic 22777) I thought it would save an otherwise worthless tree. It does mean alot to me as it was collected from the pasture of a friend who is now very ill.I know the epoxy thing will draw alot of criticism both for the fact of it being driftwood on a deciduous tree and the fact that I am manipulating the scar and taper of the tree.Maybee it wont work but I think I give it a go anyway.Rather unorthodox I know!!
Jeremy, Got my musical instruments mixed up with the french that I don't know!!!!
Regards ,
Jonathan
