Clump Maple

This is my clump maple from the front, the image is quite nice, however as you will see in the pictures below the tree has problems. the tree has a lack of branch structure and foliage at the back, this limits the trees 3rd dimension, although in reality it doesn't appear totally flat. Any ideas on how this situation can be improved? the tree is smal at around 7-8 inches high (17-20cm)

Jonny.

comments, questions, ideas welcome (oh and any ideas on variety also welcome, can provide a close up on the leaf if it helps, turns yellow in autumn). Jonny.

This has a nice feeling to it. It would be a good one to defoliate the exterior canopy. It would let the light into the interior to promote buds, and also let uus see what's going on in there. Mostly, it just needs some interior branches. If left to its own devices it will go the other way - with stronger terminal branching and weaker interior growth.

If you have 10-12 weeks or so before frost, you could partially defoliate this still.

Regards,

Matt

HI Matt,

Thanks for replying to this and the oak posting that I made.

I am relucant to defoliate the maple as I think we will have a frost in the time scale you have outlined. I also want to show it in a novice catagory at a show comoing up (mid september). However, once the leaves fall in a couple of months time i will repost so you can see the branch structure.

Will I be able to achieve back budding and inner branching by hard prunning just before the leafs come out in the spring (usually feb with this treee, quite early)?

Same thing with the oak really. We're likely to have a frost and its just got over a bout of mildew, but again I will post in the autumn when the leaves fall. I think there could be a problem with the branching from what i no of it, but we'll see. Should have posted both earlier but only just got digi camera.

Cheers Jonny.

Cutting back will certainly help, but the strength will go primarily to the new ends, and it presumes that the removed materials are not useful, which may be the case in these trees.

Partial defoliation (at the right time) does a great job of redirecting strength to the interior and allows you to preserve the terminals.

I like this clump but would like to see some minor changes in the trunk positions. I don't like the curved trunk on the left. Could this be straightened with wire or is it too thick? And I would bring in the right trunk closer to the main trunk to make the trunks more random. Here is what I would like to see in the trunk placements.

Matt,

In that case I will make sure that i defoliate the outer areas next summer to acheive some inner branching. I will also cut back to two buds in spring. Thanks.

David,

I agree, I hadn't looked at the trunk to the left before until you mentioned it, it may look better, it makes it look more rounded, I will investigate the possibility of straightening it, i don't think its two thick to do so. Thanks.

Cheers Jonny.
