citrus

Well here's the thing with this one. I have this plant I got as a gift, and I can't stand it. I am just sick of looking at its face. I don't want to throw it out or just "forget" to water it because I would feel bad. I've looked at this thing countless times since I've had it (almost a year). I can't see anything in it. It is some kind of citrus dwarf orange or whatever. It has awesome smelling flowers that come out almost all summer round and the little fruits are cool too. That about sums it up for its appeal to me. Can anyone else see any potenial that I'm missing here? Or is this one just destined to be a crappy little house/porchplant that annoys me for years to come?

Hey man - I grabbed the avatar for him. I will let you know what his reply is - has there always been good natured jesting and competition between Army and Marines?

Pot this thing in to a bigger container. Let it grow unchecked for a year or two. At that point you can do a chop reducing it to nothing but a trunk. Citrus will pop buds and they will become new branches in no time. For now look for future nebari when you repot - try to spread and encourage radial roots. Plant it at a bit of an angle and try to find a trunk like to cut to later.

I would chase the too-long branches of this tree in towards the trunk like this virtual. This will encourage budding along the branches closer in to the trunk, which is being shaded by all the growth out at the tips of the branches. I might move it to a collander that's a little larger than the pot it's in now and lay some slow release citrus fertilizer on the drainage layer before putting the tree in the pot.

This will help thicken the trunk faster than removing all the branches or doing a major trunk chop. I think a trunk chop is out on this guy because there's no trunk to chop! You've got a nice little tree there and mini oranges, kumquats, ect. are extensively used for shohin bonsai. Stick with it and this might be a good tree 10 years from now.

Well, I'm pretty sure there has always been "competion or jesting", whether it has been good natured or otherwise, from marines to every other branch of the service. Something that has just been programed into us or something. We've all got pretty big heads on who is better. Not that it matters to me, I just like to poke fun.

I think I will probably replant it and do a little trimming. Then I guess I'll just grow it out. It really needs to be planted in some real soil anyhow. Its still in the peat moss potting soil stuff or whatever it is thats in there from the store. I wasn't sure if I could to a drastic chop like that. I was scared I would kill the thing. Well, thanks all.

citrus are funny things.I have grown them from pips and they will back bud if pruned and then suddenly stop growing and just sit there for ages, doing nothing. Infuriating for Bonsai!
