Chosing A Front
This is another large ficus i've been growing...same age, same source and same initial treatment as this one http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthr...=&threadid=6686
This first picture is the present front and has been for the last 4-5 years.I am going to repot in a more shallow, but wider pot in the near future(unfortunately, financial issues dictate a mica pot )At any rate,i have been considering changing the front and would appreciate sone input from y'all. There are some pretty flagrant flaws in this tree but i'm not so sure that they are as glaring to others as they are bothersome to me........please feel free to comment on any way you think i might improve the appearance Thanks, andy |

3rd
a bit more to the left....this one gives me some problems because the lower right trunk(branch) begins to be an eye poker
this tree obviously needs to be wired and trimmed, but these two procedures would necessarily follow the choice of frontal view. thanks, andy |

Andy,
I think I like option #2 the best. The main thing it does for me is to close (or mostly close) the gaps of the smaller trunk on the right and make the trunk look bigger and more powerful, without pointing the right branch at the viewer (option 3). Option 3 would be the best if the branch was not coming that close to the viewer, plus it makes up for the apparent lack of nebari on the left side. Again #2 compensates for that better than #1. Any chance of seeing the backside of this? Adam |

Hi Andy,
nice tree... I am by no means a bonsai expert but... thought I'd give my 2cents worth... I agree with Adam about the Nebari it looks better when you turn the tree a bit to the left. The "gaps" he mentions are a bit difficult to see as the trunk and the background are rather bright. But he is right that the gap seems to show more on the present front view. I guess as one of the main critieria for orienting a tree is the root system he may be right and yet... I still like the first view better... On the second view it seems to me that the branches (2.nd and 3rd from the bottom) look too symmetric and the trunk seems to taper less at the top, the "cut off" seems to be a bit more horizontal. So: I prerfer the first view... Last edited by Ravenna : 17-May-2004 at 04:51 PM. |

Andy,
I think the current front is fine. The nebari looks good and branch placement is also there. I think it just needs to be tidied up a bit as the foliage is quite overgrown. Nice tree.

I like #2 for the same reasons given by others. If it were my tree I'd go with #2 and shorten the #1 branch by about a third. That would reduce the "eye-poking" effect but would also get you on the way to developing a tighter foliage pad.
