Choices

I have made a choice on material. I like it although it is giving me trouble as to which way to go. I will go ahead and post a couple of pics. They are not great quality but will improve in the future.

Regards,
Mark

Mark -

Looks like a good choice of learning material; a healthy juniper with nice trunk movement and lots of branches. Have you poked around a bit for the nebari?

Do you know what style you are going to use in designing your bonsai? Have you found the front? It would be fun to see your final design.

Here are the better pics. I finally set up a place to take photos!

I have only made one cut. It was a larger branch that would never fit into the final composition and was obstructing the shot of what I currently perceive to be the front.

Regards,
Mark

Actually I like this material very much. Looks like you will have a lot of challenging work to do(which I like). A lot of wiring and deadwood work to be done.

Mark,
After removing that one branch that was in the way of the trunk, it really gave a good view of the trunk line. You should have a lot of fun working with this material.

Nice choice of material, Mark!

You'll learn a heck of a lot in the process of styling this tree, that's for sure. Keep us posted - it'll be fun to watch your progress.

Best regards,
Carl

Thanks for all the positive comments so far. It is encouraging to know that others think I have acquired some nice material.

I have done a quick virtual to see if I could better show what is going on with the mass of branches.

I have removed branches I don’t intend to jin/keep.

I really like how the branch, indicated with blue, comes off the main trunk. I don’t like that it wraps around behind the other branches and makes up the entire back foliage.

I don’t like the fact that the yellow branch is completely vertical.

I am considering a possible semi-cascade with the purple branch.

Lots of thinking left to do.

Regards,
Mark

It looks like you found a nice procumbens with a fat base and taper. A couple of things to consider.....you don't have to settle for the planted angle of the nursery container and none of these branches are too thick to bend with the right wiring. So don't give up on a branch just because it's too straight or the foliage is in the wrong place at the moment. This should be fun.

Regards,

David
