chinese juniper styling question

here is a juniper i just bought and styled. i am wonder if the second segment of the trunck is too long. i was thinking of chopping off the top down to the third branch on the right as the new leader. the branch in the back on the bottom is just a sacrifice.

From what I can see it looks like a good start. In the future please put the tree against a fence or wall to help define what is going on. It is very difficult to see in the picture. The height looks fine to me though.

I agree with Newt----I think. The photo is horrible and virtually impossible to see clearly enough to give a well thought out answer. If you could post a better picture you would be helping all of us, including yourself. You asked some specific questions that require specific answers which are not possible with the image supplied.

The first straight part of the trunk bothers me a little. Short of layering off the top and starting anew with it, this is the hand you've been dealt. I don't know if I'd bother layering, but its an option.

I think you've done well with the branch placement. I tend to usually leave too many (back to my tendencies again, huh?) but this selection looks pretty good. I would probably try to bring those branches down a little so that it looks a bit older.

Good start. Work on pinching and adding some back branching. Keep it growing strong and you'll have a nice tree in short order.
