Chinese Juniper

Hello again!
Another one of my little trees here. A friend of mine asked me for some advice on this import. It had been pinched into a bush, here it was after he thinned it out and cleaned the bark.

My friend swore never to sell the tree, but I finally got it after trying for a couple of years! He swopped it on the one condition that I wouldn't remove all the lower branches as I'd suggested!

Here it is after styling this Summer. The process took a complete day, about 14 hours. Most of that was wiring.

As you can tell this used to be the side of the tree. I thought that this angle offered a lot as the front with a strong character branch on the right, and a nice curve in the upper trunk.

Here's the back...

This Juniper is quite odd in that it has a very reasonable nebari and no shari. I am reluctant to introduce a shari as well as there are no pronounced life lines or scars. This one has been a bonsai for a long time.

Now for a pot, any ideas?? It could quite easily go into a round, oval or rectangular.

Thanks for reading, any comments or critisims welcome.

Regards,

Mark

The tree looks great. It's a good thing you are keeping the lower branches, it wouldn't look so good if you cut them off (IMO). I think you should put it in to a round or oval pot.

Pot for Juniperus

Hello Mark, I think the Juniperus needs a shell with curve since the tree also has kurfen.

Question Suggestion?

Hi Mark, have reconsider once again and the Juniperus seems better with a small alteration.
Greetings, Karl T.

Thanks a lot Karl! Great virtuals. That last one is what I suggested to the old owner! It looks much better, at least in 2D. The original tree looks a bit big for the virtual pot with the lower branches on, but the lighter literati style "fits" the pot! Thanks again, food for thought .

Regards,

Mark

That's a nice tree! It looks like a Shimpaku, which is a big plus, and it has some nice curves and even rootage, which is pretty rare in Junipers.

The trunk color is great too. I think you must have some nice soft water there? Mine get all grey and crusty pretty quickly with the mix of runoff and well water they sell us here through San Jose Water Company.

Regards,

Matt

P.S. I almost forgot to add: sometimes those lower branches die from "natural" causes, and creating a Jin isn't technically removing the branch...

Hi mark,

If you're not going to remove the bottom branches then how about this ? The left branch bothers me a bit. It sticks out and doesn't follow the outline of the tree.

regards, René
