Chinese Elms and a Touch of Spring

Well spring has come fast and furious for my ch. elms regardless of what the calendar says. I wasn't even able to enjoy their bare look this year because most of them didn't even shed all their leaves. But here is two of them with brand new leaves, so I thought I would snap a few pics before the rains come back. I recently traded pots on this one with my big trident.

This is one of my first ch. elms purchased back in 1995. It recently went through a restyle by changing the back to the front and opening it up a bit.
The first pic shows what is right now, but I think I'll remove that branch on the right of the trunk and make it like the second pic. That branch seems to straight for the rest of the tree don't you think Hopefully I'll get growth
where I added it on the left side in order to balance it and make the overall look more pleasing. Any comments?

In Depth Virtual Report

I didnt really think u should cut such a nice branch off so i did a virt to explain my theory.

We'll start off with the right branch. all i pretty much did was angle up the branch a few times and then trimmed off a little of the leaves above it (the main structure of leaves.) Then put the leaf patches parallel to the ground.

The right branch was also angled a litte, but downwards (insted of the right branch going upwards) but then like on both i made the leave patches parallel to the ground. I also trimmed off a small amount of the leaves from the main leave structure on the left side and some around the little lump on the left branch. some of the leaves on the left branch that i took off might be able to be kept, but as for the virtual i did it this way so it could be more easily to see.

Hope this helps, I liked the idea, let me know what you think.

BTW- Both of these elms are amazing.

-Evan

First of all, can I just say... WOW. Absolutely stunning Chinese Elm's Thomas. The one in your first post is one of the finest examples I've seen!

I agree with Bonsaigreenhorn that it would be a shame to lose that branch on the 2nd tree. I like the simple repositioning he has done in the virtual.

Congratulations on such lovely trees!

Warmest regards,

Aaron

Idea Theft :)

BonsaiGreenhorn...you stole my idea

I agree with everything you've said, and your virtual is what I had pictured in my mind. I like that right side branch - I'd keep it!

Really nice elms. I'm hoping to pick one up myself very soon...

Hi Evan,
I see what your saying by the virtual you made up. It does look quite good in fact. After I saw it I went out to have a look, even though I knew what I was going to find, and sure enough, that branch aint bending at that point.
It's pretty solid up until it branches off about a quarter of the way out. It would really need to bend pretty much where you have it in order to be pleasing to my eye. I also don't really want to remove the branch if I can help it, but I won't keep it if I can't somehow improve on it.
