Chinese Elm For The South

I picked up this Elm from a new found friend that likes his beer. He also likes to draw on napkins. You know those hersey kisses. He is a great fellow and his wife is a hell of a cook. Tell her, Ron that you did get rid of this one.

Hi Ron I posted the elm I got from you and there was no response, kinda quiet out there. I got this monster home and pruned it and plan on start filling in the hollow as you have instructed me. If this darn rain would stop!!I have the area covered with plastic to keep what you started dry till I can keep filling. I could bring it into the greenhouse but it gets to hot in there for me. I will keep you posted,
John

This looks like a nice, large tree. What's going on with the tourniquet device towards the top?

Regards,

Matt

Well Matt,
You noticed that huh? When I bought this tree Ron was in the middle of filling a hollow that was caused from the trunk chop.
It has been raining here for (decades it seems like) so I used rafia and tied some plastic over the hole to keep dry until I can get in and finish what Ron has started. I thought of bringing it into the greenhouse but I haven't gotten air in there yet and I didn't want to melt, gets way to hot in there for me. I bought this tree while on vacation along with some really big mica pots from Ron's shop and almost had to leave the wife behind to get this monster home but boy she was lucky we got everything fitted in the van.

John, how about giving us the vital statistics of this 'monster'? just how monster is it?

What do you have in mind for it? Does the future look hershey kiss shaped by any chance?

Regards,

TB

Well TB,
It may not be a monster to most of you guys, but if I can't pick it up by myself its a monster to me. The base at the soil is 11", from the soil to the top is 36" its about 24" wide and 20" deep, midway up the trunk is 4".
As for the future I think I will let the tree tell me where to take it. Its telling me it wants to be a naturalistic style. Right now its leaning towards a melting hershey kiss

But it seems to me Chinese elms tend to get out of hand in a hurry and I end up pruning them like a hedge. Then in early spring when all the leaves are still off I go in and prune a little more Methodically. I'm still learning patience mind you.

Regards
John
