Chinese Elm -new Pot

Hi ive recieved a early birthday gift from my mum and just had to put this tree in it straight away ,and i think it suits the pot.The tree is a collected tree from a local park (collected with permision from the friendly gardener), it was growing in a garden bed near a huge chinese elm ,so i dont know how old it is ,its also my biggest ,tallest bonsai and am thinking of chopping the top again and using the back as the front .as usual any ideas or opions are welcome.

thanks

Definately needs another chop and a few more years to grow into that pot. If this is the same species as the forest you posted maybe it would have made a great #1 tree!?!?!?

I agree with the chop. the tree lacks good taper. I would chop the tree somewhere just below the middel and use a sidebranch as new leader. Let that new leader grow in length so that trunk thickness and taper improves. Once you have the required thickness, you can chop the tree again, choose a new leader, and start working on developing the primary branches and ramification.

It has potential I think.

I think the tree needs the chop to help induce more movement into the trunk moreso than taper. Not much, just enough to give it some eye appeal. I have seen LOTS of trees without very much taper that looked just fine as long as the branch structure is well done.

Don't chop, You'll make it look like everyone else's tree. It has a good shape to work with. Improve on the current style.

MMMMM thanks tim ,though i will have to fix the large scar just below the apex were the original chop was ,ill also have to build the ramification on the branches and mabye even grow some new branches and use the back as the front -so i see ive got a lot of choices with this tree -and as usual ill have problems with the apex
