Change is good? Or not?
Time to repot this California juniper, so I decided to go for a smaller pot with a lip so as to make lifting easier. And, a small style change. I would have liked to get the base closer to the left end of the pot, but that is where most of the roots grow, and I didn't want to take off too much this time. Maybe next repotting. I did remove a fair amount of foliage, and put on some wire. The guy wires are necessary to stabilize the trunk. Height from table is about 43 inches.
The image on the left was taken last year, and the one on the right was taken today. Mike

Nice improvement! I would like to see a more triagular foliage shape though. I like the new pot and potting angle.

I appreciate the deadwood even more now!! Really reminds me of lightening striking the top of the tree tearing it up and braking some of the branches off, leaving one piece of foliage over looking a cliff (Or atleast thats my perception!)..I agree with Newt, a little more trianglular with the foliage would make it more defined, I find it just a bit too round. Great job with the pot and new angle, the after picture is much more attractive!!

I don't think I've seen one of your bonsai that I don't like. Yet another marvelous tree Mike

Mr. Mike,
Nice progress on this beautiful specimen...I like the way you are begining to allow more of the branch structure to be seen, like the new pot, and am very pleased to see the slant developing more to the right...A bit more lean, and moving it closer to the left side of the pot as roots develop will put this one near the top...I also look forward to seeing the next installment of the foilage design, as long as you continue to refrain from the traditional triangle...[probably get a few more neg reps from that, but that is the way I see this tree]... Regards Behr ![]()

Mike, I think you have made an excellent choice. Both the new pot and the new angle both add significantly to the dynamism of the composition. The first pic looks a bit like a lamppost, while the new one looks distinctly like a tree. My only suggestion would be to flatten the foliage groups slightly to make the tree appear a tad larger, though I know that would only really be necessary in preparation for display.
Thumbs up all around, sir. Frog

Mike
I have seen this tree several time before on other websites and was never comfortable with the straight trunk. The change of angle of the trunk, even though slight, is an excellent improvement IMHO. I also like the change of pot. |

Thanks all, for your very kind words. On my next post, we'll see what the reaction is to a proposed pot change for a big cork oak.

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME
|
Hi Mike,
I guess I will prove my 'novice' reputation by saying I like the old pix better. The new picture to me looks very unbalanced. The tree seems to want to fall over. I am far (OK real far) from being someone to listen to, but I do think the tree had more balance in the original pix. If you or anyone can help me see why I am wrong I would greatly appreciate it.... the 2 cents of a novice Jay
