cascade elm
This elm is in an eight inch square cascade pot and is about thirty inches long. The trunk at the soil line is about two inches. We have been working on this tree for twenty years.

Re: cascade elm
I do not wire my elms, I use clip and grow method to make the foilage pads. They are very easy to produce and was wondering why this tree is not more refined if it has been in training for twenty years.

Re: cascade elm
This is a small elm that I bought at a club sale in L.A. about 12 years ago. The little elm is in the small blue pot. You can see that it is in the shape of a question mark, and was just a whip. The fellow that sold it to me said that it had been dropped and that the top got broke off. My intention was to make a cascade out of it, hence the small blue cascade pot.

Re: cascade elm
This is how the tree was coming along two years later. I planted it in the small blue pot, but it outgrew it the next year and had to go in the brown unglazed turned pot. I had said earlier in the post that I did not wire my elms, but when I found this pic i found that I have wired elms in the past. I guess I needed to crank the tail more than the clipping would provide. This was also an early attempt at making a stand, fairly heavy molding I'd say. I just thought this would be a fun tree to post since it did not look like much when I bought it, but with a little training it came out pretty well. On a sad note the tree expired about 2 years ago for no apparent reason. It was a "catlin" elm and they can just puke and die with no warning. It was about 5 inches long when I got it, but had grown to about 18 inches long and an inch wide at the base, even in the small pot.

Re: cascade elm
Hey hold the paper, I just found another pic when it was in the blue pot. This was a pic at the Fresno Fair and I found it in my fair album. You can see that the tree was inbetween the two foto's. Not bad though I won first place and best of show, of course that is not that hard to do when you can see the other tree in the pic that was my competition. The date on the back of the foto was 10/5/88. I must have bought the tree in 87. That makes it 14 years ago, wow, they say the memory s the first thing to go.

Re: cascade elm
Al: I am shure that our ideas of refined are very diffrent. The elm that is in the picture was formed by clip and grow method. Also if you do not wire your elm. What is the material wraped around the cascading limb. I have also noticed some suspicious looking marks on the upright portion of your little cascade elm. It shure looks good sitting on that blue ribbon.

Re: cascade elm
If you read in the after post I had addressed the wire issue, and ate crow, that was before I knew better. Only second mistake this year though. First mistake was repotting that pine.

Re: cascade elm
Al: I hope that your pine has not taken a turn for the worst. It looks so good in that pot. You can take the silver lining approach and say that if you acheved this look with one pine you can do it with another, and I bet you that I have the material to work with. Anyway in the spring we can get together and find a pine that will make good bunjin for you.
