Carving with "The Cockney" Mick Sherman

I spent 3 days this week working with my mentor, Mick Sherman. Amongst other work, I took along a large lump of Larch that I had collected sometime ago. Being the trunk had no taper in it at all, in fact it looked remarkably like a telegraph pole, it was decided that the only way to create some false taper and give the tree a remote chance of looking half decent was to get carving.

Once we had decided on what course of action to take, out came the arsenal...

Still some more to come out, this is what you call block carving on a large scale...

...then some detail is added in the carved area.

Now the carving is finished we can set about bending the top round to form the basic image that is required...

..after some raffia is applied and a guy wire to hold the bend in place this was the end result.

Finally I would like to thank Mick for his invaluable advice, endless inspiration and friendship, not forgetting Sylvia for putting up with me and the endless cups of tea and sandwiches. For the first 8 years of my Bonsai career I struggled then I met Mick and I was shown "The Way".

Thanks for everything

Andy

Excellent photos Stonemonkey. Looks like a good time.

We could use a picture of a die grinder and chisel for the wiki, if using a few of these is okay?

Regards,

Matt

No problem Matt, be my guest on the pics, I am sure Mick won't mind.

Yes you were right, it was a fantastic time.

Looks like you had a great time there Andy.

You've done a great job on the tree, transformed it totally. It always surprises me what a difference a few hours work can make to a tree.

Regards,

Chris.

Thanks Chris

It is just a pity I was not able to post a pic of the tree before surgery commenced. Perhaps the doctors were in a rush to get stuck into this operation. LOL. Looks like this tree may prove to be a good one in the long run. Here it is on a plain background. I am so itching to get wiring and reveal it's future image

Regards

Andy

Now that is real weird. I would swear that I saw a picture of the 'before'. I can see it in my mind's eye, straight upright with a flat top and flat-ended branch stubs...

Perhaps I've been at the keyboard too long

Regards,

Chris.

Sort of mate.

I did take a pic and print it in the log that I keep on all my trees from their conception, if they survive or not. Haven't got the digi pic anymore. I will scan the print out when I go back to work next week and post it on the thread, might be a case of Deja-vu.

Hope you are well

Andy
