Carob (Ceratonia Siliqua)

This Carob tree was bought last January at a nursery near Jerusalem. Its original height was 2,5m (8,2'). My first trunk chop was at the height of 45cm (1,5') from the soil level than it was potted in large plastic container from IKEA as a training pot.
At that time the trunk had no branches but two very small lower branches almost at soil level.
It had a nice spring growth spurt; the only training I did is a little wiring and some cutting.
Its height now is 45cm (1,5') from the soil level and the trunk width is 7,5cm 3" above the Nebari.
I believe that this tree main feature is its Nebari, it reminds me of a place under a very old Carbo tree that as a child I used to play there.
The tree has a long way to go, still I do not know what to do with the two lower branches – keep them or lose them?

I don't see either one of the sprouts contributing to the final design of the tree. You might leave one or both in place to thicken the trunk, but I would look at something along the lines of developing this tree in a natural broom style using the existing branches located higher up, or a classical broom (by doing a V cut a few inches down from the top)

Good luck,

Matt

I am always looking for movement in the lower trunk portion, unless I am planning for a straight, upright tree. So, in this case I usually cut back the trunk to about one inch above the second low branch and let those two low branches grow for a year to thicken. Then carve the stump to encourage healing.

Matt's suggestion is a good one, if you go for a broom-type shape.

The nebari looks promising.

Regards,
Attila

Thank you Matt and Attila,
Although Attila suggestion is very tempting I believe I will go with Matt suggestion.
Shalom,
Moshe.
