Carob (Ceratonia Siliqua)
A nursery stock, repotted today.
In Israel there are vary old Carob trees, some of them over few hundreds years old few of them over thousand years old! The Carob tree in Israel is the only tree that begins to shoot new shoots at September (all other trees at the end of February). It is believed that the Carob tree was a present form Queen of Sheba (Yemen) to King Shlomo (Salomon). ![]()

Carmi,
I am very interested to see how this tree comes into shape. It has many wonderful qualities already. Do you know of any Carob bonsai photographs on the internet? I would like to see a fully developed one. Thank you for sharing Paul

This is an interesting tree to work with. This is the first bonsai (or even pre-bonsai) I have seen.
I look forward to seeing how it develops. Regards, Matt

I tried myself to find photos of Carob Bonsai and did not find any.
Some of my friends in the Israeli Bonsai Club have Carob Bonsai, or at least old small carob trees in shallow pots. I will try to take some photos and post them here, I am afraid it will take at lest two weeks.

comments on the carob tree
I have tried on several ocations to work with the carob as Bonsai. As yet I have had little success as when you root pruin this tree it has a tendancy to crash. Instead of putting out new growth it just turns black and dies on me!! Of the hundreds of seedlings that I have started only one so far has lived past the cutting of the tap root. This does not mean that I have stoped trying, just that I am probably doing something wrong. I will continue to start seeds and find the right time in the year to cut the tap roots. If a person is succesful at creating a bonsai out of the carob tree they certanly will be rewarded with a beautiful twisted and knarly trunk. Most of the trees that I see are 80 year old landscape trees and the trunks are wonderful. Maby the carob is not suposed to be root pruned but just allowed to inarch into a solid mass of roots and debari like penjing. Something more for me to try.
Glenn

Hi Glenn,
I am not an expert of Carob tree (or any other tree), I already had "killed" three of them and now I am trying to "kill" the fourth one. ![]() I only know that over here, Israel, the right time for pruning the roots and repotting is now, end of September and that our weather is almost similar to your weather. Few members of the Israeli Bonsai club have Bonsai Carob or at least old Carob trees in shallow pots… We are meeting this Saturday and I hope that I will have more info. which I will post here. Next week I will try to have some photos of their trees. Thank you

Hi,
As promised, I took some pictures of Carob bonsai tree. The trees belong to Mr. Rafael Shemi, one of the most experienced members of the Israeli Bonsai Club. To his knowledge, it is very difficult to make and keep Carob bonsai trees. The trees are grown in soil mixed of 80% crushed Tuff and 20% organic matter, they are watered and fertilized, as over 200 of his trees, with computerized drip irrigation system. I will be glad to ask him any specific questions.
